MODOT Honors Fallen Workers
The event commemorated the 124 MODOT workers who have been killed in the line of duty through the lighting of an orange luminary for each employee. Twenty people were killed in 2006 alone in Missouri work zones.
State legislators have added stiffer penalties for work zone violations including hitting workers. MODOT workers and their families are asking Missourians to watch out and be more careful as they travel through construction zones this year.
"It's just tough to sit around here and know that a lot of these things could be avoided and prevented if people would just pay a little more attention. So, just be careful and take it easy," said Aaron Ashlock, who lost a family member in a work zone accident.
To commemorate the MODOT workers who have lost their lives in work zones, MODOT has added a memorial page to its website.
