MoDOT Prepares For Winter Weather
JEFFERSON CITY - The cold weather has MoDOT preparing for the snow and ice that comes with the season. The department created a new winter storm rating system. The system will provide a specific plan based on each type of storm. Storms ranking as type 1 will be the most severe with more than a foot of snow and 3/4 inches of ice.
Storms ranking as type 5 include more minor events like frost and flurries. MoDOT said the new system will allow crews to work more efficiently and by doing that the department will have more funds to resurface roads next summer.
MoDOT said it is also stocking buildings with salt and beet juice for crews to put out on slick streets. The department has more than 3,000 employees and 1,600 trucks prepared for the winter weather.
