MoDOT Updates Timing of Traffic Lights
JEFFERSON CITY - MoDOT has been quietly updating traffic signals around the Mid-Missouri area for the past 2 years. It says increasing the time of yellow lights and red lights will prevent accidents.
Matt Myers, a MoDOT traffic engineer, said every intersection's traffic light situation is different. The time duration estimated for the green, yellow and red lights are based on a mathematical formula.
In most situations, the time for the yellow lights increased several fractions of a second and are virtually unnoticeable to the public. He said some red lights increased one to two seconds, which the general public could notice.
