COLUMBIA - As the weather gets warmer more motorcyclists start taking the road. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Officials want to remind people to be aware of motorcyclists on the road and how to stay safe.

Riders Academy Coordinator Katie Tuchschmidt said it is really important to be aware of motorcyclists on the road.

"Loud pipes save lives, if you are riding down the road and you have a loud pipe on your motorcycle other cars can hear you, people can hear you," she said.

She also said people should wear helmets at all times regardless of the state law.

"Anytime you hit the road on two-wheels you take a risk so you know having that added protection I personally think is always a good idea, but I do understand it is people's choice," Tuchschmidt said.

One biker said he wears a helmet always anytime he is on a motorcycle.

"I busted one helmet wide open and if I didn't have it on I wouldn't be here," he said.

Steve Tuchschmidt, general sales manager at Harley-Davidson said they just received a new bike Thursday that he said promotes better safety.

He said the bike is for beginners who want to practice safe riding. It only has two gears and if it tips over it will immediately turn off.

"It is really for the young, youthful, true beginner motorcycle," Steve Tuchsmidt said.

He said the bike will officially be available for purchase sometime next week.
