Move of Federal Personnel Records Nearly Done
FLORISSANT, Mo. - After 18 months of work, the move of federal personnel records that are kept in St. Louis County is almost complete.
A new $115 million National Personnel Records Center on Dunn Road in north St. Louis County replaced a towering old building in Overland that formerly housed the nation's military personnel records. The process of moving thousands of boxes of records took a year and a half and officially ends on Tuesday.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the new center will hold about 100 million individual files, 57 million of them of military personnel. They are stored in 4.2 million cardboard cartons.
The military records go all the way back to 1841, and the oldest civilian file is from 1821.
