MU Confirms It Will Leave Big 12 Next Year
COLUMBIA - University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton told reporters Wednesday MU will leave the Big 12 next summer for the Southeastern Conference whether the conference approves or not. Deaton said Mizzou's decision to move to the SEC came after the Big 12 gave MU approval. But now the Big 12 opposes the switch, worried that West Virginia might not replace the Tigers in the conference.
Mizzou made the official announcement it would move to the SEC on Nov. 6th. Even though Big 12 is showing resistance now, MU has made it clear it's moving on anyway. Deaton said the Big 12's original go ahead got MU taking the next step with the SEC and the school plans to continue down that path.
Next week, the SEC will announce the 2012 football schedule with MU included. MU made the switch to ensure stability for Tiger athletics and for an expected increase in athletic department income.
Mizzou will be the fourth team to leave the Big 12 following Colorado, Nebraska and Texas A&M.
