With her husband Wayne Armbrust coaching at her side, she practices four days a week at the Hearnes Center. There are two main rules to competitve race walking, the first is that one foot must remain on the ground at all times, the second one is a little more complex and it states that from the time your foot first makes contact with the ground until your leg is vertical your knee must remain straight. These rules make race walking a grueling sport both mentally and physically.

"I can remember one race where I was really late getting us plane tickets and I got us tickets to a race in DC," Johnson said, "And I disqualified about 150 meters from the finish line."

Although she has had some mis-steps, she's currently a world record holder. Her husband Wayne films every practice and makes certain she is using the proper technique. He has to make sure not to be overly critical.

"Sometimes you got to be a little bit careful about what you say there because you have to live with them and sleep with them so you can't be yelling and screaming," Armbrust said.

The only yelling Wayne hopes to do this weekend is in support of Gayle. Wayne and Gayle have been together for 19 years. Gayle hopes to qualify for her 15th master's championship this summer.
