Murder charge added in Carthage child abuse case
CARTHAGE (AP) — Prosecutors have filed a new charge against a southwest Missouri woman in the death of her fiance's 2-year-old daughter.
Twenty-year-old Tearra D. Olson, of Carthage, initially was charged with abuse of a child resulting in death. The Joplin Globe reports that Jasper County prosecutors have since added a second-degree murder charge in the death of Emalata "Emma" Hoeft.
Authorities said Olson admitted striking the girl's head three times on a hard surface in August. The probable cause affidavit says the girl quit breathing and Olson put her in a bed. Police were called the next day.
Authorities say the child also had been left alone for hours at a time in the days before her death.
Olson's attorney didn't immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.
