Muslim Rights Discussed
Shakir Hamoodi attended the forum. Hamoodi wouldn't talk to reporters but many people who attended expressed support for Hamoodi and his family.
Ilhan used examples of acts of discrimination against Muslims such as raids on mosques and vandalism of Muslims' homes. Someone vandalized Hamoodi's home after the FBI raid.
The FBI said said Hamoodi's case is under ongoing investigation, meaning FBI agents are still in Columbia investigating the case. They wouldn't say what they're looking for or when they expect to finish the investigation.
Ilhan hopes the forum will raise greater awareness of anti-Muslim sentiment.
"I just want people to speak up, whenever there is injustice, and it doesn't matter what religion you are, just speak up," Ilhan said.
She said she doesn't know the details of Hamoodi's case, but feels the increase in raids on Muslim homes shows how the government has targeted Muslims since Sept. 11.
Hamoodi will speak at a civil rights meeting in Columbia on Thursday.
