MVC Soccer Teams Sweep Culver-Stockton

MARSHALL, MO -- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams swept Culver-Stockton College in a Heart of America Athletic Conference double-header Saturday at a chilly Gregg-Mitchell Field.

The Lady Vikings came from behind to knock off the Lady Cougars 4-2 in the first game of the evening.

The Lady Vikings found themselves down by a goal 19 minutes into the match. Just three minutes later, the Lady Vikings would tie things up, off the foot of Senior Forward Yessica Hernandez.

In the second half, the Lady Vikings would take the lead right off the bat, as Hernandez would score her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season. MVC would add to their lead, thanks to a goal by Midfielder Cayla Pisciotta, her first of the season, at the 79 minute mark. Culver would counter with a goal of their own less than one minute later, but the Lady Vikings would put the game away in the 82nd minute thanks to a goal by Sophomore Midfielder Courtney Devlin her second of the season

The win improves the Lady Vikings to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while Culver drops to 7-3-1 overall and 0-2 in HAAC play.

Meanwhile the No. 13 ranked Missouri Valley men's team used three first half goals to knock off Culver-Stockton by a score of 6-0, and get the first conference win of the season.

Getting the Vikings on the board first just over 14 minutes into the match was Junior Midfielder Nicholas Alexander, scoring his sixth goal of the season. Just ten minutes later, Junior Midfielder Miguel Jiminez would make the score 2-0. Junior Midfielder Alberto Gomez would score his fourth goal of the season ten minutes before halftime, making the score 3-0 in favor of MVC.

A trio of goals were scored in the second half, including Jiminez's second goal, and fourth of the season, 15 minutes after halftime. Making the game 5-0 was Freshman Forward Melquiades Mors with less than 15 minutes left to play in the game, while Freshman Forward Alberto Agurto capped off the scoring in the 86th minute. Meanwhile, Junior Goalkeeper Josh Wells recorded his second shutout of the season.

The win improves MVC to 6-3-1 overall and 1-1 in HAAC play, and Culver drops to 3-7-1 overall and 0-2 in HAAC play.

Up next for the men's and women's soccer teams is another home double-header, this time against Central Methodist University. Women's game time is 6 p.m., men's game time is 8 p.m. at Gregg-Mitchell Field.
