National Geographic Society Names Local Geographic Bee Semifinalist
ASHLAND - The National Geographic Society named a local student a Missouri Geographic Bee Semifinalist. Southern Boone Middle Schooler Erik Griffen is now eligible to compete in the 2012 Missouri Geographic Bee, which will be held on MU's campus on Friday, March 30, 2012.
Schools with fourth-through-eighth grade students throughout the state held the geographic bees to determine each school's winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society invites the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.
The state winner receives $100, the "Complete National Geographic on DVD", and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he or she will represent Missouri in the national finals at National Geographic Society headquarters, from May 22 to May 24. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarshiop, a lifetime membership in the Society, and all expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.
