New Device Sends Alerts
Makers of a keychain-size device called the "e-Fob" say it may revolutionize communication during emergencies.
The device, made by Purple Tree Technologies, works by using GPS technology to relay information from 911 dispatchers to the e-Fob through cell towers.
Makers say the e-Fob will provide immediate alerts during acts of terror, amber alerts, school violence and traffic accidents.
It transmits emergency information immediately.
"If the Virginia Tech students had known there was a shooting on campus, they would have been notified as to where to avoid or stay in their dormitories or given specific directions and instructions as to what to do," Rick Happel, CEO Purple Tree Technologies, said.
The e-Fob, made in Independence, Mo., costs 25 dollars.
It will be available in November.
