New Direction for Hickman Basketball
It belongs to new head coach, Kenny Ash, and he is no stranger to Hickman.
"I was really kind of raised in this gym, my father used to be the coach here back in the 70's, so I always had a little purple in my heart. I always wanted to be a Kewpie deep down inside and now I am, and I'm happy to be here," said Hickman's Head Coach Kenny Ash.
He wants to add a 'new' chapter to Hickman basketball history.
"We're just trying to play hard, improve on defense, and try to give the kids a great experience," commented Ash.
His players are enjoying the ride so far.
"He just wants the best for us. He is trying to bring out the best and trying to teach us. Sometimes we're a little stubborn, but we're picking it up," said senior C.J. Ely.
"It's fun, and he gives us a lot of confidence because he's coming in expecting to win. We're not used to winning, but he's helping us get ready to win," remarked senior Byron Bundy.
"It's different and it's an adjustment, but its for the better. He's a great coach who makes us work harder, and pushes us," added Ely.
Ash is trying to build relationships off the court as well.
"It's not about basketball all the time. We're trying to do some team things where we can bond and unify our group," said Ash.
"He's really cool. I can talk to him about anything. I can just come to him and he'll help me out no matter what it is."
When asked about his goals for the team Ash said he wants "to put the kids in a successful situation. We obviously want to shoot for a district title and see where we go from there."
Both Ash and his players think that success is not far away. The Kewpies are 2 and 2 so far this year.
