COLUMBIA - Charter Communications employees and the Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday as Charter will start to service Columbia and Fulton on Wednesday.

The installation of Charter Communications in both cities cost the company $5,000,000.

Sean O'Donnell, vice president of the Missouri/Illinois Charter branch, said the company hopes to service residents and businesses that otherwise don't have access to any high speed internet, cable, and phone options.

"We've spent a lot of time telling customers and the community that it's coming," O'Donnell said. "We turn on the lights in a couple of days, [and] we're really expecting a response [from the community]."

Both Columbia and Fulton have areas now that are still relying on dial-up internet, because some of the services available cut-off, or aren't powerful enough past a certain geographic line.

O'Donnell said Charter will be in geographic areas where other services like Mediacom are not available.

MOBroadBandNow is a state initiative that addresses the problems of areas not having access to high speed internet, and high definition cable. MOBroadBandNow's website said the program intends to make broadband available to 95 percent of Missouri by 2014.
