New Plant in Joplin to Make Space Batteries
JOPLIN- Lighter-weight batteries for the US space program and defense industry will be built at a new $10 million plant in Joplin. The announcement by technology company EaglePicher was made yesterday, the same day US astronauts installed EaglePicher batteries in the International Space Station. The change doubles the station's ability to power itself when a solar eclipse darkens its sun cells. The new plant will be in addition to one in Joplin where EaglePicher already makes nickel-cadmium and nickel-hydrogen batteries for space and defense programs. It will continue that production. The new plant will employ about 100 people, some of whom might come from existing Joplin operations where about 800 people work.
