News Brief: Ameren Rates
The Public Service Commission approved an increase for Missouri's largest electric company Tuesday.
The last time Ameren-UE had a rate hike was in 1987. This time, the utility company asked for a $360 million dollar rate increase, but the commission approved only a $43 million increase. The approved increase was 88% less than the original request.
For customers, the rate increase will add about $2.40 a month to an average $70 electric bill. The Attorney General says Ameren's rates should go down, not up, and that he will appeal the Public Service Commission's decision.
"Almost everybody has to use electricity and when it gets high it's just a sad state of affairs for people on fixed incomes," said John Grant, Jefferson City resident.
