No. 1 Mizzou wrestling leads after first day of MAC Championships

COLUMBIA - No. 1 Missouri wrestling got a great start to the MAC Championship on Saturday, going 9-1 in quarterfinals and 8-1 in semifnals in individual events and leading with a team score of 122.0 points.

The Tigers are looking for their third-straight MAC Championship and the next closest team is Old Dominion with 76.5.

In the quarterfinals, No. 1 J'Den Cox dominated in the 197-pound class where he won by major decision over Jackson Lewis. Cox got an excape early in the match and earned a takedown to help set up the 17-3 victory.

No. 3 Drake Houdashelt and Alan Waters also earned big victories combining to go 33-2 with victories on technical falls.

In the semi-finals, senior Alan Waters dominated again with a 17-0 technical fall victory over EMU's Blake Caudil, finishing the day by outscoring his opponents 34-1. Waters meets Northern Iowa's Dylan Peters for the 125-pound MAC Championship. 

Reshirt freshman Willie Miklus impressed in his first MAC Championship, pinning his opponent in his quarterfinal match, and taking a major decision in the semi-finals. 

Joining Miklus and Waters as championship match qualifers include  redshirt sophomore Zach Synon, redshirt senior Drake Houdashelt, sophomore Joey Lavallee, redshirt senior Johnny Eblen, sophomore J'den Cox, and redshirt senior Devin Mellon.

Based on the NCAA qualifier allocations for the MAC confercence, Waters, Houdashelt, Lavallee, Eblen, Miklus, Cox, and Mellon have all secured spots to the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.

The final day of the MAC Championships begins Sunday, Mar. 8 at 12 p.m. CT.
