No. 13 Mizzou Defeats No. 15 Cal

BERKELEY, CA -- The No. 13 University of Missouri soccer team scored three second half goals to post a 3-2 win over No. 15 California Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, California. The win improves Mizzou's record to 3-0 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-2.

The Bears struck first in the ninth minute when they were awarded free kick deep in their offensive half. The kick was sent into the box, where Ifeoma Onumonu one-timed a shot that went beyond the outstretched arms of Sauerwein for a 1-0 Cal advantage.

Mizzou's offense finally found the back of the net when Adeshigbin knotted the score at 1-1 just six minutes into the second. The senior dribbled the ball down the left side and unleashed a 16-yard yard that deflected over Cal's goalie for a 1-1 game. The tally was the third of the season for Adeshigbin to tie her for the team lead.

Senior Haley Krentz gave Missouri its first lead of the game, 2-1, when she scored her first goal of the season in the 58th minute. Junior Danielle Nottingham sent a long cross to Krentz in the right side of the box. Krentz sent a low shot across the goal and into the lower left netting.

Cal tied the match at 2-2 in the 74th minute when Betsy Hassett's low shot went to the right of Sauerwein for a Bear goal.

The Tigers countered less than two minutes later off a corner kick. Krentz lofted a ball to the far post, where Raymer headed the ball back at the goal and past the Cal goalie for a 3-2 Mizzou lead. The tally was the second of the season for Raymer, including her second game-winning goal in as many games.

The Bears pressed in the final minutes of the game but Mizzou's defense held to preserve the victory.

Both teams recorded 19 shots and six corner kicks in the game. Sauerwein made seven saves in net for the Tigers.

Mizzou returns home to Walton Stadium next weekend with a pair of home contest. On Friday, August 31 the Tigers host Arizona State at 6:30 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. game against Tennessee Tech on Sunday, September 2.
