No. 23 CMU Softball Splits with Missouri Valley
MARSHALL, MO -- The No. 23-ranked Central Methodist softball team split a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader against Missouri Valley on Saturday. The Eagles (33-12, 14-2 HAAC) lost the first game 1-0 but won the second contest 8-3 against the Vikings (13-20, 5-11 HAAC).
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. Esperanza Rothwell singled to center field, scoring Elizabeth Luna for the final margin.
Missouri Valley's Kim Lopez earned the victory in the circle in game one. She pitched a complete game, seven hitter.
Central Methodist's Aubrey Utley suffered the defeat in game one. She pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out six.
After the home team built a 3-0 lead in the second game through the first inning, Central Methodist's Rebecca Lipsey, Jacqulin Cappuccilli, and Kerri Francis hit solo homeruns in the top of the third, fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to tie the game. A Kayla Yount two-run bomb in the sixth gave the Eagles the upper hand for good.
The Eagles' Rebekah Munday piched a complete game in the circle for the win. She allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits and struck out three.
The Vikings' Janie Jungermann took the loss. She gave up five earned runs on six hits in five innings.
Central Methodist will host Graceland for a doubleheader on Sunday with the chance to clinch the regular season championship outright for the second consecutive season. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CDT.
