No. 68 Mizzou Downs No. 43 Stephen F. Austin
NACOGDOCHES, TX -- The No. 68 Mizzou tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over No. 43 Stephen F. Austin to snap the 'Jack's 14-match winning streak on Friday. The win improved Mizzou's record to 7-8 on the year, while the 'Jacks fell to 16-3. Missouri's win also marked the team's fourth over a higher ranked opponent this season.
The duo of seniors Nina Pantic and Jamie Mera claimed the first doubles match over Tereza Bekerova and Malena Gordo, 8-3, but the 'Jacks rebounded with wins are No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point. At No. 2, Alina Shazhko and Jithmie Jayawickrema defeated junior Maria Christensen and sophomore Rachel Stuhlmann, 8-1, and Elena Kordolaimi and Laura Servise beat freshmen Alex Clark and Ashleigh Chiaf, 8-3, at No. 3.
Mizzou tied the match at 1-1 when Clark posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gordo at No. 5 singles. Mera then gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead after she claimed a 7-6 (10-6), 6-3 victory over Antonia Kolovou at No. 4.
Junior Annemijn Koenen defeated Jayawickrema, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6 singles to give Mizzou a 3-1 advantage. Christensen then clinched the win as she recorded a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Bekerova at No. 3 action.
Stephen F. Austin claimed wins at No. 1 and 2 singles to put the final score at 4-3. Kordolaimi claimed a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Panic at No. 1 and Shazhko defeated Stuhlmann 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 2 action.
The Tigers next face the Rice at 2 p.m. Saturday in Houston, Texas.
