BOONE COUNTY - A woman is lucky to be alive after a fire broke out near her trailer home on North Reams Road Thursday afternoon.

Darla Herigon was taking a nap when flames broke out near her home around 3:00 pm. Herigon's neighbor, a former firefighter, was driving by Herigon's home and noticed the flames. The neighbor knocked on the door and helped Herigon escape with her three dogs.

"I am very, very thankful, very thankful, very thankful. It's very scary," Herigon said.

Chuck Leake, battalion chief with the Boone County Fire Protection District, said it is too dry outside to burn.

Leake said the cause of the fire is unknown. The fire damaged two trailer homes on the property.
