KINGDOM CITY - Just because the bell rings, doesn't mean some students in the North Callaway School District will be heading home in the next few weeks.  The school district received the "21st Century Community Learning Centers After School" federal grant which will allows students to participate in a before- and after-school program.  The grant, worth $1.86 million, aims to help students improve their classroom skills while also learning about life skills outside of regular school hours.  If successful, the grant will continue to aid the North Callaway School District over the course of the next five years.

To do so, the program will introduce students to different material than they see in general education classes.  Students will be able to take classes such as: digital photography, creative writing, robotics, culinary arts, or remedial tutoring. These classes are to begin as early as Sept. 12.

Although the program will only be offered at two schools within the district, all students can participate. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be able to take classes at Auxvasse Elementary School.  Grades nine to 12 will take part in the program down the road at North Callaway High School. Both schools will offer the program from 7 - 8 a.m. and from 3:15 - 6:15 p.m. In addition, a portion of the grant money will go to ensure students who choose to participate will have transportation around the program.

Brian Jobe, who worked closely with David Hopkins to get the grant, said he believes "This program will help to serve the North Callaway community at large."
