Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspecting Callaway plant
FULTON (AP) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is conducting an inspection at the Callaway Nuclear Plant in central Missouri.
The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports the inspectors will be at the plant operated by Ameren Missouri for about a week to review the failure of three of four control valves that regulate water flow to the steam generators.
The NRC says in August, a control valve on the motor-driven water pumps failed, after a modification on the valve apparently introduced a design flaw. The NRC was told of a similar problem in December 2014, and a third unrelated control valve problem earlier this year.
Regional IV Administrator Marc Dapas says inspectors will study the circumstances surrounding the valve failures, determine if the plants review was sufficient, and review corrective actions that were taken.
