Obama to Speak at Joplin High School Graduation
JOPLIN - President Obama is set to deliver the commencement address Monday to Joplin High School's senior class. The class is graduating one day before the anniversary of the EF-5 tornado touchdown last year, killing 161 people including 7 students.
The tornado touched down just after the class of 2011's graduation from Joplin High School.
The tornado damaged 10 Joplin school buildings, completely destroying Joplin High School. The 2012 graduating class spent their senior year at a temporary high school inside a shopping mall.
There are plans underway for a new high school to be opened in August 2014. This year's incoming freshmen class is expected to be the first class to graduate from the new school.
President Obama will be arriving in Joplin at 6:30 p.m. Graduation is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Missouri Southwest State University
