OccupyComo Members Gather Downtown
COLUMBIA - The second anniversary of a significant Supreme Court case brought OccupyComo members together downtown Friday.
The 2010 case of Citizens United v. FEC granted corporations and unions first amendment rights and lessened government regulation of their spending. One OccupyComo member thinks that this had a great effect on the country's political campaigning as big businesses could fund politicians in large sums.
"Money inhibits free speech," James Gilles said. "Giving to one candidate, that silences all the others that can't afford to give to another candidate."
The group of OccupyComo beat the cold weather and stayed warm by walking back and forth from the Boone County Courthouse to City Hall.
