MOKANE — Callaway County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported shooting involving an off-duty Fulton Police Department officer late Thursday evening after a near vehicle collision.

The sherriff's office said deputies responded to the scene around 10 p.m. on the 900 block of County Road 445 near Mokane and found a 29-year-old Mokane resident operating an ATV recklessly.

The ATV driver nearly struck a vehicle driven by an off-duty Fulton Police Department Officer.

The sherriff's office said after the near collision, the ATV driver stopped, confronted and physically assaulted the off-duty officer. During the physical assault, the officer discharged his firearm and struck the ATV driver.

According to the sherriff's office, the ATV driver was taken to University Hospital in Columbia with non-life-threatening injuries.

The case is with the Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney for the requested charges of felony DWI, assault on a law enforcement officer and other traffic offenses against the ATV driver.

The sherriff's office said the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with the initial investigation.
