COLUMBIA - One person is dead after a tractor trailer struck a sedan on U.S. 63 northbound early Saturday afternoon.

Police said John Guffey, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene when his red sedan passed over the median and collided with a semi-trailer head-on.

Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Stephen Potter told KOMU 8 News the Columbia Police Department was able to respond to the scene in about five minutes.

"We actually had CPD officers in a company truck over here for the Polar Plunge over at Bass Pro, so we had a pretty quick response time," Potter said.

The car was traveling south before crossing into the northbound lanes.

The driver of the semitrailer was uninjured and declined medical treatment.

The accident was near the Vandiver Drive exit and completely shut down traffic along the highway, with cars backed up a few miles.
