Operation Tyler Preparing for Move-In Day
COLE COUNTY - Volunteers came to Jefferson City today to assist in the cleaning and preperation of a new "smart home" for a mid-Missouri marine veteran. The house has been under construction since last May, and Cpl. Tyler Huffman and his family are expected to move in on Veterans Day.
Members of the Jefferson City Jays softball team came to support the effort. Along with other volunteers, they spent the afternoon cleaning the house, installing appliances, and getting the hosue ready for move-in day.
Since May 2012, crews have been working on the 2,700 sqaure foot home for Cpl. Tyler Huffman as a part of "Operation Tyler." The ranch style home includes lowered coutnertops, wide doorways, and is completely accesible for Huffman.
Cpl. Tyler Huffman served in Afghanistan, and was a paralyzed after a sniper shot him in December 2010. Since then, general contractor for the house Scott Schaeperkoetter said the Jefferson City community has rallied behind Huffman.
"It really is amazing how supportive the community's been. Donating money, time resources, we would'nt have been able to do it without their support."
Furniture and other finishing touches will be completed next week.
