Parking Problems in Downtown Columbia
COLUMBIA - A new report out this week found parking in downtown Columbia is still a problem, even with the latest 701-space garage in downtown.
Since it opened for public use in 2011, the 5th & Walnut Parking Garage has freed spaces in other garages. But there are still people waiting to get parking permits in downtown garages.
Because it's hard to get parking permits, some residents said they would rather buy temporary permits.
"They are very hard to get," said downtown worker Harvey Hoffman. "You get on a waiting list, and a lot of the time it's just easier pay by the hour, than to pay for a monthly pass that I never get."
To solve the problem, the city is now building a new parking garage on Short Street. That garage is scheduled to finish in August and will add 423 spaces.
