COLUMBIA - Two men died after a black SUV hit them along I-70 Thursday evening. Police said the two had been filling up their vehicle with gas along the side of the interstate when the SUV veered into the shoulder, hitting both pedestrians.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived around 8 p.m. Thursday evening. The other man involved was taken to a local hospital where he died around 9:30 p.m. Police said the driver of the SUV did not suffer any major injuries.
Eastbound traffic on I-70 near US 63 came to a complete standstill at around 8:15 p.m. when both lanes were closed due to the accident. Police later re-opened the inside lane of I-70 eastbound, allowing traffic to move through. Police and emergency response teams had removed all vehicles by 10 p.m.
Police have not released the victims' names until they notify family members. Police said they have not made any arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
