Pentagon Confirms Death of Kansas City Man in Helicopter Crash
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Pentagon has confirmed that a Northwest Missouri State University graduate who grew up outside Kansas City was among the victims of a deadly helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
The Pentagon confirmed Thursday that 37-seven-year-old Matthew D. Mason was one of 30 U.S. troops and eight Afghans whose military helicopter was shot down five days ago.
Mason grew up in Holt and played football and baseball at Kearney High School. He graduated from Northwest Missouri in 1998.Holt and his wife had two sons and were expecting their third child.
A family friend says he suffered severe injuries during the second battle of Fallujah in 2004, losing part of his left arm, absorbing shrapnel and suffering a collapsed lung. Mason nonetheless returned to the Iraq War battlefield months later.
