Pet Website Offers National Access
The website Petfinder.com features stray animals such as Cassiopea and Isis who need homes.
"We are able to list our adoptable animals, cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, birds, everything, and then the Internet user is able to put in their zip code and it locates animals closest to them," explained Patty Forister, Central Missouri Humane Society executive director. "So someone from Columbia looking for maybe a beagle would get our shelter first and then it would go and spread throughout the nation so they could find one as far away as California or New York."
And, because Petfinder is a nationwide search, Forister said the site can help smaller shelters outside big cities.
"Many rural shelters who don't have the population in their area are able to outreach lots and lots of people through that website," she added.
After searching Petfinder.com, Forister drove to Kentucky to adopt a sheepdog named Frosting.
Cassiopea already has a new home but, if you're interested in adopting Isis, call the Central Missouri Humane Society at 573-443-3893.
