JEFFERSON CITY- More than 100 residents attended an open discussion about changes at the new Jefferson City High School. The city's school board plans to implement an academic style of teaching at the new location on Highway 179. The school will house seven buildings, each tailored to an academic area of concentration. Supporters say a central high school with an academy approach to learning is a growing success in other cities and the new plan will build a dominating sports program. Residents against the proposed plan fear the teacher to student ratio and the school's ability to manage behavioral problems.

The city's school board plans to build a central location to accommodate rising enrollment numbers. The total cost of the project is set at 80 million dollars and will appear on the ballot in April. Jefferson City High School is the 11th largest in the state of Missouri with about 2,600 high school students in the school district. Lincoln University plans to purchase the current Jefferson City High School complex for more than 8 million dollars and Linn State Technical College will buy the Simonsen Ninth Grade Center.
