COLUMBIA - As people begin to prepare for a Memorial Day Weekend filled with barbecues and boating, there's another activity to keep in mind: bargain hunting.

Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the start of garage sale season, and mid-Missouri has quite a lot of sales. Buyers can find anything from kitchen ware, to children's toys, to clothes, to appliances for considerably less than store-bought prices.

Sellers should keep an eye on the money they are receiving and make sure the bills are not counterfeit. The Jefferson City Police Department said Thursday some simple ways to check for authentic bills are:

  • Check for the watermark of the president's face when holding the bill up to the light
  • Make sure the bills are the right color and texture
  • Buy a counterfeit bill pen to test bills
  • Avoid accepting large bills
