Police say be on alert for IRS phone scam
CAMDENTON - Camdenton police are warning people to be aware of an IRS phone scam.
Police said an automated caller has been contacting people and saying there is a pending lawsuit against them when there really isn't.
Police said the IRS will never try to contact a taxpayer over the phone. Police warn the caller might keep calling and leaving harassing messages threatening to call the police if a payment isn't made. Police said don't believe the threat even if the caller provides a Badge Identification Number.
Police said people should call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 if they think they owe taxes, and the IRS will help with a payment issue. Police also said if people receive a call from the IRS and don't think they owe money, to report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 or on its website.
