Police Say Don't Call 911 for Fireworks
Public Safety Joint Communications manager Zim Schwartze said 911 is not the correct number to call for noise from fireworks and fire crackers.
She said people should only call 911 if the situation is an emergency.
"Obviously, if someone is injured by fireworks or needs medical attention, please call 911," said Schwartze. "Also, if people believe that it may be gunshots rather than fireworks, don't hesitate to call 911."
Bob Sobule manages Spirit of 76 Fireworks on Rangeline. He said it isn't common to confuse fireworks with gunshots, but it can happen.
"There are some fireworks that are illegal, we don't sell them here but other places do, that can sound similar to a gunshot," said Sobule. "But gunshots have a very unique sound."
Sobule said people with fireworks should be respectful of their neighbors. And others should recognize that the noise is part of the celebration so everyone can have a good time this holiday weekend.
"It's 4th of July," said Sobule. "We're all out having fun celebrating our Independence. I think a lot of people let things slide."
