Possible Rape at Cole County Jail
A number of issues about the case have raised some red flags.
Cole County prosecutor Bill Tackett say jailers moved a female inmate from her cell to the jail's interview room. She was chained to a bench cemented in the room's floor.
She ate and slept there overnight, while the room's door was left open. A security camera shows Darryle Key, a male inmate and a jail trusty, entering the room and having a sexual encounter with the female inmate.
"You're allowing someone who had misconduct in their shop, then to make the decision on whether or not it was misconduct," said Tackett. "That is simply not the way the world works. When you do something that you are suspected of wrongdoing, a third party comes in and makes that determination."
The Cole County sheriff's office investigated and said the sex was consensual. But the female inmate's attorney watched the tape, and he disagrees.
Sam Trapp, the inmates attorney said, "How it's being dealt with right now, in my opinion, is a cover-up, and not an investigation to find out what really went wrong. I'd rather see someone go in and say, 'you know what, we really screwed up here, and we need to fix this'."
Both Tackett and Trapp say a third party outside the sheriff's department should investigate the female inmate's accusations.
That would likely be the Missouri Highway Patrol.
Trapp plans on filing a civil suit tomorrow against Cole County for the incident.
