JOPLIN (AP) - Joplin school officials say enrollment in the district is nearly the same as before it suffered serious losses in the 2011 tornado.

The district's enrollment dropped by 265 students after the May 2011 tornado devastated parts of the city. On Tuesday, Joplin superintendent C.J. Huff told the board of education that the district has gained back 210 students. The district's total enrollment as of Tuesday was 7,543 students.

Ten Joplin schools were damaged or destroyed when an EF-5 tornado struck the city, killing 161 people and injuring hundreds more.

The Joplin Globe reports that Huff says the district's efforts to help families after the tornado are paying off, and the district has a bright future.
