Quicker Background Checks Not Cheaper
That usual six-week process took only 30 minutes for Sanford Speake and his business partner because they went to Jefferson City to get theirs in person.
"Since none of us had ever been in trouble, it wasn't difficult to get our license other than the time and all the forms," Speake said. "If the city is able to make it easier for business owners to get their licenses, then it's a good thing. If there's less waiting, then it's a good thing for everyone."
Each background check by the highway patrol costs $5. A private company could charge $7-$10 for each check.
Speake said he wouldn't mind paying more if it means getting a business license more quickly.
As soon as January 2007, Columbia could start accepting proposals from private companies to perform background checks.
