Rear-End Collision Causes Texas County Deaths
TEXAS COUNTY - Janet Hoffman, 78, of Salem, Mo. and Ralph F. Hoffman died after 48-year-old James McCune's vehicle struck their vehicle from behind at approximately 1:20 p.m. Thursday. The crash occurred on US-63 near Northview Road.
According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a total of five vehicles were involved in this accident. The Hoffman's vehicle was third in a line of cars stopped in traffic when McCune's vehicle failed to stop. It struck the Hoffman's vehicle which then struck the vehicle in front of it, knocking that second vehicle into a third in the line of traffic. These four vehicles were travelling northbound.
The crash forced the Hoffman's vehicle into the southbound lane where it struck a fifth vehicle head-on. The driver of that vehicle, Erica Wyble of Roby, Mo., suffered minor injuries. The passengers and drivers of vehicles struck in traffic also suffered serious to minor injuries. A Texas County coroner pronounced Janet Hoffman dead at the scene of the crash. Rescue workers transported Ralph F. Hoffman to Texas County Memorial Hospital before eventually pronouncing him dead. Neither fatality was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
