Recycled Roof Shingles for Paving Roads
The recycling program could begin this Friday, using replaced roofing mixed with asphalt to line streets. Then, shingles would join the list of paper, plastics and other recycled items.
Now, shingles end up in the city landfill with other trash. Just last Saturday, the landfill received about 70 loads of shingles.
So, Columbia wants to sell shingles to paving contractors, extending the life of the landfill.
"If we can figure out a way to do this at no increased cost to us, and I think we do, then we have the green light to proceed," said the department's Dennie Pendergrass.
Public Works wants to begin the recycling program before residents replace more storm-damaged roofs.
