Recycling Your Christmas Tree
Now, getting rid of your Christmas tree is as easy as removing its decorations. In fact, some trees in Columbia are already mulch, and yours can be, too. Just leave it at the curb for pickup, or take it to Capen Park or other park-side mulch sites.
"It's great that we recycle what we have because we only have limited resources on this planet," said Columbia resident Brady Snyder.
But, you must remove all decorations from your tree, as well as its stand, in order to recycle the tree.
Jefferson City has a similar program, but it won't pick up trees at the curb. Jefferson City residents should take their trees to Washington Park's parking lot.
"Each year, we take some and work with the Department of Conservation and make fish habitats. We have three lakes that we manage," explained J.J. Gates of the Parks and Recreation Department. "We also grind the tree up and use the mulch throughout the park system."
So, this holiday season, it's easy to help protect the environment. Christmas tree recycling programs began Monday and continue in Columbia and Jefferson City until the end of next month.
