MID-MISSOURI - The American Red Cross says cooking is the leading cause of fires in the home, so you should make sure all cooking surfaces are grease-free to prevent catching fire.

Before prepping Thanksgiving dinner, here are some additional tips the Red Cross says you should consider:

  • Check on your food often and use a timer to remind you the oven is on.
  • Keep kids at least three feet away from the oven
  • Install smoke alarms near the kitchen and sleeping areas
  • Make sure all your appliances are turned off before leaving the house or going to bed

The Red Cross also advises you not to wear clothes with loose or dangling sleeves while cooking. If you forget any of these tips, you can download a free American Red Cross app for your Apple or Android smart phone.
