AP-MO--3rd NewsMinute,0242Here is the latest Missouri news from The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Flash flood warnings are posted in parts of central Missouri, as another round of slow-moving thunderstorms moves through the area. Heavy rains and a small tornado hit the area yesterday -- and Springfield set a record for one day of rainfall. In the Kansas City area overnight, thousands of homes and businesses lost power in rainy, windy weather. UNION, Mo. (AP) -- A judge in Franklin County is considering a request that a jury to be brought in from another county in the Abby Woods kidnapping case. Shannon Torrez is accused of kidnapping the week-old infant last September and slashing the throat of the child's mother at her home. A defense attorney says Torrez can't get a fair trial with a jury from the area. ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A California fund-raising organization promises to stop calling Missourians on the state's No-Call list. Attorney General Jay Nixon says the Police Protective Fund claimed donations would help families of law officers who died in the line of duty. But Nixon says of almost 6 million dollars taken in, the group paid only $37,000 in benefits. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- More than one-third of college freshmen at Missouri's public schools had to take remedial courses last year. That's up sharply compared with a decade ago. Remedial math courses were at the top of the list, but students also needed remedial English and reading. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP-09-07-07 0732CDT
