Residents will educate the community on the dangers of plastic
COLUMBIA - Columbia residents plan to educate the community on the negative effects of single-use plastic bags this week by using a documentary film.
The documentary "Bag It" by Suzan Beraza will be shown to promote the single-use plastic bag ordinance presented to the city council on October 20. The documentary will be shown Tuesday at 6 p.m. at RagTime Cinema followed by a twenty-minute discussion lead by University of Missouri biological sciences Professor, Vom Saal.
Vom Saal partnered with Jan Dye, chair of the conservation organization, Osage Group to create the ordinance.
"What we hope to do is inform and educate, and hopefully get people on board with the bag ordinance," said Dye.
She also said that the harm of these plastic bags is greater than their benefit to consumers.
"We use these bags for about 15 to 20 minutes before we just discard them. It's a huge waste and something we need to stop doing," Dye said.
