COLUMBIA - Columbia Public Schools (CPS) is looking for its first chief equity officer

The position was posted yesterday on the district's job board. The person will oversee student services, English language learners and migrant education, Columbia Area Career Center, Special Services and MAC scholars

The new hire will be expected to fill in for Deputy Superintendent Dana Clippard, who is retiring on June 30. The new officer will be taking over some of the deputy superintendent's roles, and a reorganization of Superintendent Peter Stiepleman's cabinet will occur.

CPS Community Relations Director Michelle Baumstark said the new position not only provides better organization but enables CPS to grow as a school district.

"This is a great opportunity for us to be able to advance what our goals are as a school district," Baumstark said. "It is about achievement. It is about enrichment and it is about creating opportunities for access for all of our students. This really speaks to what our goals are as a district. It makes sense and it is the right time for us to be able to move forward with creating this particular position.”

Baumstark said chief equity officers are not a position that is new for K-12 education but a position becoming more prevalent in school districts that are seeking support when it comes to equity initiatives.

"It will be great for there to be an individual who becomes an expert in those areas as far as creating consistency and implementation across the school district," Baumstark said.

CPS will see more changes after June 30, with new hires Keith Bausman and Dr. Jill Brown taking over as assistant superintendent for humans resources and assistant superintendent for elementary education, respectively.

Chief Financial Officer Linda Quinley announced last week she would leave the district and CPS is still looking for her replacement.

The chief equity officer position is still open for applicants and Stiepleman has complete control of who is hired.
