Road Construction Jobs Hard to Find This Summer
CALLAWAY COUNTY - MoDOT said Thursday there will be fewer big highway construction projects than normal this summer.
MoDOT said it will not contract out any big jobs, and will instead concentrate more on maintaining and resurfacing roads.
MoDOT Assistant District Engineer Travis Koestner said, "With more resources you would see some more bigger projects or safety type projects. We'd love to do more, but right now we are kind of in maintenance mode to take care of what we have."
MoDOT officials said drivers are still going to see workers out on the road, just doing different things like line striping and mowing.
The director of government relation for contractor Emery and Sons, Lowell Patterson, said, "Right now we are backlogged with projects from before summer." Patterson also said private contractors like Emery and Sons do more than just highway work, and receive contracts from many different places.
In 2011, MoDOT reduced its number of employees by 1200 and officials said they have enough employees to keep busy with all of the maintenance jobs.
