Road Maintenance Crews Revving Up for Winter Season
COLUMBIA - MoDOT, Columbia Public Works, and the Boone County Highway Department are starting preparations for the season's changes. These preparations begin with hiring additional workers, replacing and repairing trucks, and finding the right melting mixtures.
MoDOT is currently preparing 170 trucks and has 30,311 tons of salt for the 5 central districts including Columbia, Boonville, and Jefferson City.
Also preparing for the snow and ice, is the Columbia Public Works which has ordered extra trucks making a total of 18, and it has also decided to change its main melting mixture.
The goal this year is to use as much straight salt as weather conditions will allow. This change is due to the complaints of motorists about the darker salt and cinders mixture. These melting mixtures along with a liquid solution of calcium chloride are being stored and created at the Salt Dome off of Rangeline Street.
