Robotic surgery now available in the Jefferson City
JEFFERSON CITY - The most advanced surgical robot is now available in the Jefferson City.
Capital Region Medical Center announced the acquisition Tuesday of the most advanced da Vinci Xi Surgical System.
According to a news release, the da Vinci Surgical System is a less invasive technique that is referred to as "open surgery." It is a tool that utilizes advanced robotic, computer and optical technologies to assist surgeons with their operations. The system does not act on its own and its movements are controlled by a highly trained, experienced surgeon.
The da Vinci Surgical system has a 3D high definition vision system, which allows the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.
Dr. Carl Doerhoff, a general surgeon with Capital Region Physicians, said the major advantage is that it allows the surgeon to make small, precise movements inside the body with the mechanical wrists that bend and rotate to mimic the movements of human wrists.
"It's the standard of the industry now for those procedures," Doerhoff said.
He said the benefits are obvious.
"There's a shorter hospital stays whenever this is utilized and replaces open surgery, so that is the really advantage," he said.
He said there is no additional cost for the patient or the insurance company once the technology is used.
"Not only the patient in this area can have their procedures in Jefferson City, but it's an opportunity for Jefferson City to attract specialists," he said.
