FULTON - A new outdoor activity has been bringing out Missourians to look for hidden rocks since the start of the summer.

The activity first started in Lebanon, Missouri a couple of months ago, and it's gained instant popularity across the state.

"Probably close to 20,000 people in total in the state painting rocks," said Jesse Staats, the organizer of the activity in Fulton, "Fulton Rocks!".

She created the group earlier this month, and more than 2,000 people joined her within two weeks.

Anybody can participate in the easy activity. People collect rocks, paint the rocks and then hide them across the community. They'll also try to find other people's rocks and replace them for others to find.

"I was inspired by the group JC Rocks I heard about a few weeks ago," Staats said.

JC Rocks organizer Charity Blair said her group is currently the biggest rock painting group in Missouri, with more than 11,000 members.

The way to participate in the rock painting activity is quite similar to the popular cell phone game Pokemon Go, and Staats said they're both good.

"I think they're both really positive activities. It gets people out and it gets people in the community interacting with each other and coming together," she said.

Staats said she's glad more and more people are joining the group.

"I think that spreads positivity throughout the community, and right now the world is, and even here in the U.S., there's a lot of negativity especially in the media. Any time you can spread positivity and make someone's day, it's a good thing," Staats said.

Staats has painted more than 100 rocks herself.
